Amman-Al Ghad- Nissan revealed today, Wednesday, the all-new Ariya crossover, starting a new chapter in the production of Nissan electric cars.
The Ariya, Nissan's first all-electric crossover, offers strong acceleration, smooth and quiet operation, and a luxurious interior. Stress-free autonomous driving features and seamless personal assistance and connectivity systems enhance confidence on the road and provide a welcoming environment for driver and passengers. With an estimated range of 610 km (based on the Japanese WLTC cycle and subject to approval by the authorities), the Ariya is the perfect partner for both daily commutes and long trips.
The Nissan Ariya is based heavily on the concept car of the same name that was shown at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show and was first hinted at during the unveiling of the IMx at the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show. It is the first production model and represents the brand's electric identity It also paves the way for a new automotive era in which electrification, platform optimization and aerodynamic AI technologies will become commonplace.
Building on the all-new electric vehicle platform developed by the alliance, the Ariya best reflects Nissan Intelligent Mobility, the company's strategy to enhance the attractiveness of its cars and achieve the ultimate goal of a future free of emissions and zero deaths from road accidents. It also represents the three main pillars of Nissan Intelligent Mobility (Smart Power, Intelligent Driving, and Intelligent Integration) and combines advanced electric vehicle technology with a new level of seamless human-machine communication, providing an entirely new driving experience.
Design: Completely reimagined structure
The outer cabin
The all-new Ariya reflects the highest levels of style and technology, complementing each other in aesthetics and functionality. The model's 100% electric vehicle platform removed basic limitations and allowed designers to take new approaches to design.
The design takes into account Nissan Intelligent Mobility, redefining the company's new design philosophy, which is based on what Nissan calls Timeless Japanese Futurism - a distinctly Japanese approach that is underlined in a simple yet effective way. The designers adopted this approach by adhering to keywords such as elegance, excitement and smoothness as they proved that an electric vehicle combined with advanced driving capabilities can offer a new perspective on design, functionality and the ownership experience.
The front of the car looks smooth, elegant and fresh thanks to the design being based on the Japanese term iki. It is highlighted by a shield that replaces the front grille in electric cars. The shield, in the form of a traditional Japanese 3D kumiko pattern directly under the smooth surface, protects the sensor equipment used for ProPILOT functions and Intelligent Key tuning without compromising the aesthetics of the vehicle's operation.
The redesigned Nissan brand logo stands out clearly in the center of the shield and is illuminated by the 20 LEDs that comprise it. The new brand logo represents Nissan's passion and commitment to innovation by breaking with tradition. The logo reflects adherence to the company's heritage while looking towards the future of mobility and electricity services as the sun and stripe design elements are preserved.
Giovanni Arroba, Senior Design Director, said: “The Ariya's exterior measurements show what's possible with Nissan's 100% electric vehicle platform. Short overhangs, a bold roofline and large wheels provide an elegant look that balances sportiness with luxury.”
The Ariya will be offered in nine duo-color options, all of which include a black roof and five full-body duo color combinations.
The interior
Their design was based in the most efficient and ergonomic way on the Japanese term ma – referring to spatiotemporal apertures. The interior cabin reflects luxury, elegance, spaciousness, as well as the power of communication, to arouse curiosity more than the traditional car cabin. The advantages provided by the all-new electric vehicle platform allowed the Ariya to have the most spacious cabin in its class. Compact powertrain components enabled Nissan engineers to install the climate control system under the hood (where a conventional petrol engine would be), allowing the designers to use the entire length of the cabin without obstructions such as a transmission tunnel or placing cabin systems under the dashboard. In addition, the flat, open floor – made possible by the location of the battery at the base of the chassis – and slim Zero Gravity seats provide ample legroom and facilitate interaction between front and rear passengers. The quiet transmission and generous use of sound-deadening materials results in a noise-free cabin, allowing everyone inside to relax and enjoy a stress-free journey.
Front seat passengers can enjoy the Ariya's simple dashboard that blends seamlessly with the cabin's look right up to the doors. They are devoid of the buttons and switches found in conventional cars. The basic temperature control functions are integrated into the wooden center panel in the form of tactile switches that provide the same feeling as when pressing mechanical switches, which vibrate when touched.
The adjustable center console can be moved to suit the driver's preferences and settings can be saved as part of the driver's profile for automatic adjustment during future trips. The surface includes a new gear shifter that fits snugly in the palm of the hand to enhance driving comfort, and the Touch Drive mode controls are easily accessible.
Rear passengers enjoy ample head and legroom as the flat cabin floor allows for easy cross-legged seating and relaxation. Touches and embellishments have been added to the back space to create the same sense of sophistication and comfort. The slim front seats are also positioned to block the B-pillar, giving passengers a panoramic view outward.
Aruba said: “The interior of the Ariya provides a comfortable living space for the driver and passengers and allows them to enjoy while traveling and visiting familiar and new destinations. Materials throughout the interior have been carefully chosen to avoid the overly traditional feel of some luxury cars and to provide a glimpse into the technologically advanced future.”
Smart Energy: An impressive electric vehicle performance that meets a wide range of needs
The Nissan Ariya's all-electric drive system is an example of the seamless integration of advanced electric vehicle technologies. It takes the excitement and possibility of zero-emissions mobility to the next level by combining excellent energy savings, charging capabilities and extended range.
The Ariya caters to the driving needs of a wide range of customers by offering it in four basic models, with two or all-wheel drive.
The Ariya 2WD model with 63 kWh battery capacity is ideal for urban, city and first-time electric vehicle owners looking for quality and style in a next-generation electric vehicle. The Ariya two-wheel drive model is equipped with a larger battery with a capacity of 87 kWh, which allows it to travel an additional distance suitable for those looking to take longer trips.
The Ariya e-4ORCE AWD model with its 63 kWh battery capacity offers an attractive balance of performance and value. The high-mileage model delivers impressive performance and innovative new technologies, including twin electric motors and e-4ORCE control technology, that deliver balanced, predictable power to all four wheels equal to or more than many luxury sports cars currently available. The all-wheel-drive Ariya e-4ORCE features an 87 kWh battery capacity and Nissan's highest level of intelligent mobility, including ProPILOT 2.0 that provides hands-free, single-lane highway driving.
Whether as a two- or all-wheel-drive model, the Ariya's power and performance add excitement to the daily commute and encourage drivers to explore more.
e-4ORCE: comfort and control without compromise
Ariya AWD models with twin electric motors will feature Nissan's most advanced all-wheel drive control technology: e-4ORCE. This technology is the result of lessons learned from the development of the ATTESA E-TS drivetrain in the Nissan GT-R and Intelligent All-Wheel Drive in the Nissan Patrol.
By managing power output and braking performance, the e-4ORCE enhances driver confidence as it identifies the desired driving line over any road surface without the need to change driving style. When cornering on snow-covered roads for example, the car can follow the driver's intended line thanks to the highly precise engine and brake control. Driving becomes more enjoyable thanks to the confident handling of a variety of road surfaces.
Engineers have developed the e-4ORCE's precise control technology and dual electric motors to provide unparalleled driving comfort. Vehicle shake is reduced by adding a rear engine self-braking system to the usual front engine self-braking system currently used by electric and hybrid vehicles.
By utilizing e-4ORCE's precise engine control response, we can control the car's movement by simply applying the brakes, which gives everyone in the car, especially the passengers Steady and smooth driving experience.
In addition to optimizing front and rear torque distribution, the system applies independent brake control across all four wheels to increase the cornering force generated by each. This enables cornering that perfectly mimics the driver's intentions with minimal steering adjustments.
Smooth and impressive presence on the road
The platform of the all-new Ariya Electric has been optimized to deliver exceptional handling, true to Nissan's heritage of fun-to-drive cars. The battery is positioned under the center of the vehicle to ensure a low center of gravity and an almost equal weight distribution front and rear. The flat battery pack design allows the Ariya to have a flat floor and impressive structural rigidity. Suspension elements have also been reinforced to take advantage of this, ensuring stable handling and a comfortable ride and preventing vibration and noise from entering the cabin.
In the rear, the suspension including multi-link system and rear electric motor (if equipped) provide an exceptional balance between ride comfort, control and performance.
With three driving modes available: Standard, Sport and ECO (e-4ORCE models include an additional Snow mode for snowy roads), drivers can customize their experience to suit their desires and surroundings. The Ariya's rigid body structure and responsive steering ensure the vehicle's agility, while the 50:50 front-rear weight distribution made possible by the battery's placement under the floor in the middle of the car helps the Ariya behave in a predictable manner around corners. The flat undercarriage nature contributes to driving stability, while tight cornering enhances the Ariya's capabilities on highways, narrow streets and in parking lots.
In addition to all-new advanced technologies that provide a smoother and more relaxed drive, the Nissan Ariya also features driver assistance technology that hundreds of thousands of drivers around the world have enjoyed. The electronic accelerator pedal introduced for the first time in the Nissan LEAF electric car allows the driver to start, accelerate and decelerate the vehicle using only the accelerator pedal. The e-Pedal works by inducing the electric motor to initiate deceleration when the accelerator pedal is depressed. On low-traction surfaces, the brakes are applied in conjunction with the engine, allowing all four wheels to slow the vehicle safely. In the model equipped with the e-4ORCE system, torque is distributed to the front and rear wheels as well.
Each Ariya model delivers impressive mileage and fast recovery and recharge thanks to a battery thermal control feature that continuously optimizes the operating temperature of the liquid-cooled battery. Using a peak charge of 130 kW, the Ariya can recover up to 375 km with a quick 30-minute charge with the Japanese CHAdeMO charging system (Japan specification charging system capable of charging at 130 kW. Rating subject to approval of authorities, environment and battery conditions).
Smart Driving: A high-tech, stress-free driving experience
The Ariya ensures high levels of comfort and confidence by providing passengers with the latest Nissan technologies, including the advanced ProPILOT 2.0 driver assistance system.
The system's seven cameras, five radars and 12 ultrasonic sensors detect lane boundaries and objects around the vehicle, allowing for a single, predetermined, hands-free lane at a speed that matches the traffic. It also enables safe and efficient lane changes with a simple confirmation from the driver at the push of a button. ProPILOT 2.0 also uses a dedicated antenna for precise geolocation, which helps create a smooth, predictable ride while the assistance system is operating.
ProPILOT 2.0 uses navigation and high-precision 3D map data to detect road surface, direction and speed limits and adjust vehicle speed accordingly to provide a safe and trouble-free journey. A driver monitoring system located on the steering column ensures that the driver is aware of the road ahead when the hands-free driving feature is engaged. In addition to instrument cluster information and a head-up display, the status of the ProPILOT system is shown in the cabin by an advanced ambient lighting system: white indicates normal manual operation or intelligent cruise control is operating. Green indicates driving with the hands-free assistance system on. The blue color indicates that the hands-free driving function and the lane change assist system are activated.
When driving on a pre-determined lane with your hands, ProPILOT consults extensive 3D map data to keep the vehicle centered in the lane more precisely. The map data also enables more assistance to the driver during cornering by using road curvature data to navigate curves safely, reducing driver stress.
The Nissan Ariya is also equipped with additional innovative 360-degree safety features such as the Nissan Safety Shield system including Intelligent Around View Monitor, Intelligent Forward Collision Warning, Intelligent Emergency Braking and Automatic Rear Flying Braking technology.
Intelligent Integration: Keeping the Nissan Ariya up-to-date and maximizing its capabilities
The Ariya embodies Nissan's driver-centric design philosophy and includes state-of-the-art connectivity, including a new human-machine interface and remote firmware updates. Nissan's Intelligent Personal Assistance technology features a hybrid voice recognition system with advanced natural language understanding technology to provide in-car assistance without the driver taking their eyes off the road. The Ariya also includes Amazon Alexa to help customers simplify and organize their lives. Alexa can play music, make calls, listen to audiobooks, control smart home devices, and more with just your voice. The two systems work in tandem to provide a seamless user experience during daily commutes or weekend trips.
Using the NissanConnect mobile app, the Ariya's climate controls can be set to the driver's preferences even before entering the vehicle.
When approaching the Nissan Ariya while holding the Intelligent Key, the doors open and the exterior front and rear lights, as well as the Nissan logo, turn on automatically, indicating that the car is aware that the driver is nearby. The display front features a 12.3-inch instrument cluster screen and a 12.3-inch center screen along a single horizon. By displaying multiple aspects of information on a single horizontal plane, information can be quickly absorbed without distracting the driver from the road. Information is displayed on both screens in wave form to ensure easy access to important vehicle information such as battery information, range and navigation. More information can be transferred between the screens to determine what is best displayed behind the wheel.
The Ariya's color head-up display is one of the largest in its class. By saying “Hello Nissan” or “Hey Nissan,” passengers can verbally request information about the vehicle and manage their itinerary, including searching for locations of interest. In-car functions such as selecting a playlist or adjusting the cabin temperature can be activated without the driver needing to look away from the road. With wireless connectivity, the system can access cloud data to better understand unique requests.
Alexa services can be used during the trip home to perform “car-to-home” functions, including turning on indoor home lighting or opening the garage door.
Fukuda said: “Nissan's intelligent personal assistance technology is an expression of omotenashi, the Japanese custom of utmost respect for the customer. It provides a seamless experience inside and outside the car and the Ariya supports your lifestyle whether at home or on the road.”
