Turkey deposits SIM cards and produces a local alternative integrated with smart devices
Mada Post - translation
Deputy Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Omer Fatih Sayan, announced that work with the eSIM technology, which will replace regular SIM cards, will begin in the coming period.
The Turkish Deputy Minister shared, through his Twitter account, the latest developments regarding the new eSIM technology that is being worked on.
As Mada Post translated from Anatolia, Sayan stated that Turkey is one of four countries that have developed technology with local capabilities and obtained a certificate from the Unified System for Mobile Communications GSM.
Multiple advantages
Sayan stressed that the technology that is being developed by Turkish engineers will be used in the near future.
In his statement to Anadolu Agency, Sayan indicated that a new world awaits people who own eSIMs, whose architecture will provide important facilities for M2M / IoT devices and devices that are used in daily life.
Sayan also pointed out that the eSIM technology will achieve many advantages, such as reducing the negative effects of production processes on the environment.
In addition, the new technology will provide the ability to eliminate the costs of maintenance, access, logistics and card storage.
About the new technology, Sayan said: An eSIM is a type of programmable digital SIM card built directly into the device.
Built-in chip
He explained, that the eSIM is not an actual plastic card, but a small chip built into smart devices, which allows the mobile operator to change via remote access without the need for direct intervention of any device, that is, without the need to change the SIM card.
Sayan pointed out that eSIM provides solutions for user devices in various fields, such as smartphones and computers, and in industries such as cars.
Sayan explained the advantages of an eSIM that when changing the mobile operator, it is possible to switch between mobile operators without actually changing the SIM card.
Sayan reminded that in the case of regular SIM cards they can only be obtained through merchants or by mail, while with an eSIM, it will be possible to load the operator's profile on the device.
He also indicated that the consumer should consider the size of the SIM card and use the appropriate physical SIM card for his device, while the eSIM technology will eliminate this difference.
Sayan added that in the near future, examples of eSIM applications will begin to be seen in many fields and sectors, noting that the Turkish Information and Communications Technology General Authority has made the necessary arrangements for the new technology in this context.
100% national production
He added that with the decision taken by the Turkish Information and Communication Technologies Authority on February 12, 2019, the installation and use of systems that support remote programmable SIM technologies were provided to be completely local and national as of the same year.
Within the scope of the decision, all devices supporting this technology and used by the end user, including the automotive industry, will now be able to benefit from the eSIM technology.
With the work done after the Council's decision, the installation and regulation of the internationally certified equipment has been completed with the requirement of 100% local capabilities being met.
Additionally, in line with the decision taken, international networks that do not adhere to the rules of the Regulation have been asked to supplement their shortcomings by giving time for their subscriptions.
The eSIM technology, which will be effectively used in different scenarios, especially in Internet-connected devices such as M2M, will serve global companies and business scenarios through the local eSIM infrastructure.
The eSIM offers a wide range of uses, from smartphones and wearable technologies to many industrial products connected to the Internet called M2M.
With the eSIM infrastructure, the need to use a physical SIM card to connect all these devices to the Internet will be eliminated and replaced with secure software technology.
